Moderate: use with caution

Can you take turmeric with blood thinners?

Also searched as: curcumin, warfarin, Eliquis, Plavix

Short answer

Turmeric in food is generally fine. Concentrated turmeric or curcumin supplements may add to bleeding risk with blood thinners, so check with your prescriber first.

Why it happens

Curcumin may have mild blood-thinning effects. In supplement doses, that effect could add to medicines like warfarin, apixaban or clopidogrel.

What to do

  • Tell your prescriber before starting a turmeric or curcumin supplement.
  • Cooking with turmeric is a different, much smaller amount.

Signs to watch for

  • Easy bruising
  • Bleeding that's hard to stop

If symptoms are severe, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
