Moderate: use with caution

Can you take fish oil with warfarin?

Also searched as: Coumadin, Jantoven, omega-3

Short answer

Often yes, but only with your prescriber's knowledge. Fish oil can slightly increase bleeding risk, and higher doses may affect how warfarin works, so your INR may need closer monitoring.

Why it happens

Warfarin thins the blood. Omega-3 fatty acids can also reduce platelet clumping, so the two together may add to bleeding risk, especially at higher fish oil doses.

What to do

  • Tell the person who manages your warfarin before starting, stopping or changing a fish oil dose.
  • Keep the dose steady from day to day.
  • Expect your INR may be checked more often at first.

Signs to watch for

  • Unusual bruising
  • Bleeding gums or nosebleeds
  • Blood in urine or dark stools

If symptoms are severe, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
