Serious: usually avoid

Can you take aspirin with warfarin?

Also searched as: Coumadin, baby aspirin, Bayer

Short answer

Only if your prescriber specifically wants you on both. Together they significantly increase the risk of serious bleeding.

Why it happens

Warfarin slows blood clotting and aspirin blocks platelets. Each works differently, so the effects add up. Aspirin can also irritate the stomach lining, raising the risk of stomach bleeding.

What to do

  • Don't take aspirin (including low-dose or combination cold products) with warfarin unless your prescriber told you to.
  • Check labels: many over-the-counter pain and cold products contain aspirin.
  • Ask your pharmacist which pain reliever is safer for you.

Signs to watch for

  • Black or bloody stools
  • Vomiting blood
  • Unusual bruising
  • Severe headache

If symptoms are severe, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
