Serious: usually avoid

Can you take tramadol with an SSRI antidepressant?

Also searched as: Ultram, Zoloft, Prozac, Lexapro, escitalopram

Short answer

Only with your prescriber's oversight. The combination raises the risk of serotonin syndrome and seizures.

Why it happens

Tramadol increases serotonin and can lower the seizure threshold. SSRIs also raise serotonin, and some (like fluoxetine) slow how tramadol is processed.

What to do

  • Make sure the prescriber of each medicine knows about the other.
  • Ask whether a different pain medicine would be safer for you.

Signs to watch for

  • Agitation, confusion or fast heartbeat
  • Fever, sweating or muscle twitching
  • Seizures: call 911

If symptoms are severe, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
