Can you take Viagra with nitroglycerin or other nitrates?
Also searched as: tadalafil, Cialis, Imdur, Nitrostat
Short answer
No. This combination is contraindicated. Together they can cause a sudden, dangerous drop in blood pressure.
Why it happens
Both sildenafil and nitrates widen blood vessels. Combined, blood pressure can fall low enough to cause fainting, heart attack or stroke.
What to do
- Don't take sildenafil or tadalafil if you use any nitrate medicine, including as-needed nitroglycerin.
- If you have chest pain after taking sildenafil, call 911 and tell responders when you took it.
Signs to watch for
- Dizziness or fainting
- Chest pain
- Severe headache
If symptoms are severe, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
