Serious: usually avoid

Can you take ibuprofen with lithium?

Also searched as: Advil, Motrin, Aleve

Short answer

Avoid it unless your prescriber approves and monitors you. NSAIDs can raise lithium levels into a toxic range.

Why it happens

NSAIDs reduce how quickly the kidneys clear lithium, so lithium builds up in the blood.

What to do

  • Ask your prescriber or pharmacist before taking any NSAID.
  • If an NSAID is approved, your lithium level may need checking.
  • Acetaminophen is often the safer choice, but confirm with your care team.

Signs to watch for

  • Shaky hands, nausea or diarrhea
  • Confusion or unsteady walking
  • Slurred speech

If symptoms are severe, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
