Moderate: use with caution

Can you take Cipro with antacids or vitamins?

Also searched as: levofloxacin, doxycycline, Tums, multivitamin

Short answer

Not at the same time. Minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc can block the antibiotic from being absorbed, so it may not work.

Why it happens

These minerals bind to ciprofloxacin in the gut. The same is true for tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline.

What to do

  • Take ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids, multivitamins or mineral supplements (follow your label).
  • Ask your pharmacist about dairy timing too.

Signs to watch for

  • Infection not improving as expected

If symptoms are severe, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
